As a key initiative under the National Financial Capability Strategy, ASIC’s Moneysmart program helps Australians take control of their financial lives.
MoneySmart was launched in 2011. In 2018 we undertook a review with the aim to:
- increase engagement
- set our platforms up for measurable continuous improvement
- refresh the user experience and make technical upgrades to the website
The main output of this project is an improved user experience that provides the starting point when making a range of financial decisions.
What's changed
The major changes on Moneysmart beta are:
- it provides a starting point for people making financial decisions, not every related piece of information on a topic
- a new logo, design style and content voice and tone
- content has been designed to support specific user objectives
- there’s a new information architecture and simplified navigation
- certain content is available via search and not the navigation menu
Explore Moneysmart and use the Do you find this page useful? section at the bottom of each page to provide your feedback
Putting people first
In 2018, our Financial Capability Lab conducted a range of research activities to understand financial consumer behaviour. We wanted to better understand how Australians make financial decisions. Through the Lab, ASIC:
- engaged with over 1,000 consumers
- conducted qualitative research, mapping how Australians use the Moneysmart website as part of their day-to-day lives
- conducted workshops with consumers and stakeholders
- undertook prototyping and testing
Key findings from these research activities that informed the evolution of Moneysmart were that:
- people seek out online information when making financial decisions. According to Google Trends, in 2018 Australians conducted over 205 million Google searches of generic financial terms (this excludes brand related searches)
- experience with money in early adulthood impacts future financial decision making
- Moneysmart is a trusted source of independent information and Australians appreciate the role the website plays in building confidence when researching financial decisions
About Moneysmart
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a page not in the navigation menu?
4 out of 5 Moneysmart visitors land on a specific calculator or content page after an online search rather than exploring the site through the navigation menu. Less than 5% of Moneysmart users use the menu to navigate to content. The new site structure reflects this user behaviour. Some pages can only be found by searching keywords (e.g. search ‘mobile phone’ to find the ‘Mobile phone deals and plans’ page).
The more the site search function is used, the smarter it will become.
Do I need to update links in resources that reference Moneysmart?
While it’s a good idea to check and update any resources that link to Moneysmart, we have redirected old URLs to the relevant page on the new website so they should still work.
