Where to get free legal advice

If you need help and can’t afford a solicitor, free support may be available.

If you’re not sure who to contact, start with one of the organisations below. They can help you find the right service.

Legal services can help with many different legal problems. For example, they may be able to help with:


If you've received a default notice, or someone is taking court action against you because you owe money, get legal advice as soon as you can.

If you need urgent help with food, bills or housing, see urgent help with money.

Community legal centres

Community legal centres provide free legal help.

Some centres help with general legal problems. Others specialise in debt, housing, family law or support for particular groups in the community.

First Nations legal services

Mob Strong Debt Help 1800 808 488 is a free nationwide financial counselling and legal advice service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
