Ways to save on energy costs

Compare energy suppliers to get the best deal for the energy you use

What affects your energy bill

Your energy bill is shaped by how much electricity and gas you use, the price your provider charges, and your contract.

Heating, cooling, kitchen appliances and laundry machines use the most energy in homes. The way you use these things, and the size of your household, both affect your bill. Seasonal changes and the hours you use energy can also make a difference.

As every household is different, the best way to save will depend on your situation. But if you’re able to choose your own energy plan, that’s a great starting point.

How to compare energy providers and contracts

If you live in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory, you can use the Australian Government's Energy Made Easy website to compare energy supplie.

If you live in Victoria, use Victorian Energy Compare.

Both comparison tools are a free and independent government service and take less than 5 minutes to use.

If you live in the Northern Territory you’re covered by territory laws rather than national law. You can find out more on the Utilities Commission website.

By providing some information about your energy usage (which you can find on your energy bill), these tools show offers from different energy companies that might suit your needs.

If you don’t want to switch providers, just call your current one and ask if they have a cheaper contract that matches your usage.

Things you can do to reduce your energy usage

Whether or not you change your energy provider or contract, there may be some behavioural changes you can try, like:

✅ Heating and cooling – only heat or cool the room you're using. Open or close blinds to help control the temperature inside. Adjust your air conditioner to an energy-efficient setting. Block draughts to avoid leaking heat (for example, put a door snake against the door).

✅ Laundry – run your washing machine with a full load. Use cold water in your machine where possible.

✅ Appliances – use energy-efficient appliances or lights, if you can. Try to use appliances outside peak times when tariffs are lower (check your bill to see when it's cheaper).

✅ Turn off when not in use – turn off 'vampire appliances' at the wall, to avoid wasting energy. These include gaming consoles, anything with 'standby mode', and phones at full charge.

If you can't pay your electricity, gas, phone or water bill, contact your service provider straight away. They will explain your options, such as extensions, instalments, Centrelink deductions and utility rebates and vouchers.

See our list of agencies that offer utility vouchers in each state. You can apply for a utility rebate or voucher by contacting the agency in your state directly.
